The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health practice presents both benefits and significant risks. This session will provide an introductory level of understanding of AI and how it is currently being used in mental health practice, with a significant conversation around the possibilities for the future.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define “Artificial Intelligence” (AI).
  2. Explain how AI is currently being used in mental health practice.
  3. Identify the ethical and legal concerns for using AI in mental health practice
  4. Apply a framework to evaluate ethical and legal concerns for the use of AI in mental health practice at a practical and policy level.

Agenda:

Introductions (5 minutes)

Introduction to AI (45 minutes)

This section will define artificial intelligence, and outline the evolution of AI.

Use of AI in Mental Health Practice (60 minutes)

This section will explore the ways that AI is currently used in mental health practice. The use

of AI in charting and record keeping, transcriptions, summaries, determining diagnoses and

providing interventions will all be discussed.

Evaluating the Risks & Benefits of AI (60 minutes)

An ethical evaluation framework will be used to explore the risks & benefits of AI. Risks and

benefits to clients, professionals, and society at large will be discussed.

Conclusions/Questions (10 minutes)
