Class 1

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST

See My Color - Why Racial Colorblindness is Unethical: An Ethics Training (3 CE Credits - Ethics, Cultural Competence)

More than 50 years after Dr. King's speech, racial disparities continue to exist in various systems, including healthcare, education, the criminal justice system and those impacted by poverty. As a counselor, not only is it unrealistic to be racially colorblind, it is dangerous and does more harm than good. If you don't see my color, you can't see me. And if you can't see me how can you empathize with my racial experiences, accept my whole being and validate my perspectives.

Class 2

1:45 PM - 4:45 PM EST

Death By A Thousand Nicks – Healing the Wounds of Racial Trauma Through Anti-Oppressive Diagnosis & Treatment (3 CE Credits - Trauma, Cult. Comp., Anti-Oppressive)

Professor Alvin Poussaint described the cumulative impact of microaggressions as “death by a thousand nicks”. What might seem small and insignificant can become ingrained into the very fiber of one’s being, causing the body to live in a constant state of alert.

This workshop will explore how racialized oppression against the Black community impacts the physical, social, and psychological health of individuals and communities. Participants will explore systemic oppression, evaluate the presence of implicit bias within themselves and their profession and engage in dialogue to consider the application of cultural humility, anti-racist practices and action they can engage in to promote healing, power shifting and racial equity.
